Historic Bethabara Park

Winston-Salem
Forsyth County, NC

Historic Bethabara Park

German-speaking Moravians founded this settlement in1753; the first Moravian settlement in North Carolina. This Historic Landmark aims to preserve this heritage with various buildings along with the grounds, gardens, events, and an extensive trail system.

The medicinal garden in Bethabara is the country's oldest.

When members of the Moravian Church settled in the Yadkin River Valley in 1753, Bethabara was the first settlement. It was then followed by Bethania in 1759 and Salem in 1766. The Moravians owned a large piece of land called the Wachovia Tract of which parts were sold and the town of Winston was founded there in 1851. Winston and Salem were later incorporated together as what is now known as Winston-Salem.

Historic Bethabara is a National Historic Landmark. It includes

  • Medicinal Garden: Oldest medicinal garden in the country

  • Community Garden: Oldest documented in the country

  • Gemeinhaus: Restored 18th century German church

  • various buildings and ruins

  • lifestyle re-enacted and explained by costumed interpreters

... and much more... See for yourself...
